Texans Together Brings Brazilian Dance to Community

Texans Together and the Brazilian Arts Foundation are working together to bring a little bit of Brazil to kids at the Falls of Bellaire Resource Center.  The Resource Center is part of Texans Together's Apartments Are Communities that has teamed up with CASE (Center for Afterschool, Summer, and Enrichment for Kids) to bring this activity to the kids.

Texans Together Engaged with Parents

Texans Together's Empower Houston Leaders (EHL) Parental Engagement Class at Katherine Smith Elementary held a "Know Your Rights" session. The session was a part of the classes' project to help parents understand immigration, voting, and other rights.

Know Your Rights

Our Empower Houston Leaders  (EHL) Parental Engagement  Class project is to provide access and engage parents about their rights.  They not only want to help the parents understand how to do everyday activities like providing identification to pick up their children from school, but also correct information about  immigration and voting rights. Their first step is to partner up with Mi Familia Vota and have information sessions.  Their first one is tonight!

Pre-K is Facing Defunding

What happened to Pre-K Funding? Yesterday, the Texas Senate Finance Panel joined the House in basically defunding Pre-K in Texas.  While Pre-K was one of Governor Greg Abbott's priorities, the Texas Legislature appears to disagree. Studies have shown that quality Pre-K improves the ability of children to succeed. If our children are successful, everyone succeeds.  It is critical to our workforce, improved innovation, and economic growth. To defund children is to defund the future.

International Women's Day with an EHL Leader

In Houston, one of our newest EHL (Empower Houston Leaders) participants, Lidia Suarez Garcia, stood with her sisters around the world by wearing red as she went through her busy day.

Make a Difference: Let the Right People Know What You Think

It happens all the time.  You are watching television, reading a news article, or just talking with friends and suddenly, you’re getting an eye or ear full about an issue or what your elected official is going to do about an issue.  If it is something that you care about, you want to respond.  The normal, immediate outreach is to go to a comment section or “discuss” with your friend or family.  However, if it ends there, you just wasted your time and more importantly failed to make a difference.

Parents Engaged with EHL Graduation

In November, Texans Together graduated our first group of parents from our Parental Engagement Empower Houston Leaders (EHL) class.  Working in partnerships with the Houston Health Department's My Brother's Keeper to improve parental involvement in their community, the class consisted of parents from Fifth Ward area schools.  After a six-week class, twenty-five parents graduated and will now join our EHL network of volunteers.

Texans Together at Library Opening

We were out at the Houston Public Library Grand Opening of the Alice M Young Library on Griggs Rd.  The event brought out  over 200 adults and children from the community together to enjoy and tour the new space. They had face painting, balloon animals, a bounce house and even a Puppet Show for kids.  Adults had an opportunity to connect with community resources and enjoy a DJ and dancing.  There were even leaders from the City of Houston there to enjoy meeting community members and the new library.

Texans Together Community Carnival and Voter Rally

Texans Together’s Community Carnival and Voter Rally at Ripley House Neighborhood Center brought the heat to early voting on Saturday. We had a huge energized turnout who enjoyed performances by Los Skarnales and Fat Tony.  Since Ripley House was an Early Voting location, engaged voters got great music and got their voting taken care of.  Other community partners were there to support the event like Tacos and Votes, and The League of Women Voters.

Texans Together Rocking the Vote!

Texans Together’s Screw Up the Vote concert rocked the vote hard on Saturday.  We had a great turnout from the community for the concert at the 8th Wonder Brewery.  Not only did the crowd enjoy great musical performances, but also they jammed to the most important message: VOTE!
