A Healthy Kids Saturday at YMCA in Alief

Working for Community Health in Alief

Another Saturday and another great Health Fair!  We spent last Saturday out at the Alief Health Fair.  The fair was to help the Alief Community become aware about healthy living.

Hard at Work on School Work at Falls of Bellaire Resource Center

Eva Calvillo, One of our Field Coordinators checked in from the Falls of Bellaire Resource Center today:

Busy day at the Center! The school year may be winding down, but these kids are keeping busy with school work!

Working with the Community for Children

Last Saturday we were out in Alief working with other community leaders and vendors at an Alief Children's Health Fair. There was a great turnout with over a 100 families before all of the bad weather.

A Major Spring Cleaning at Falls of Bellaire

Falls of Bellaire Resource Center kicked off our spring cleaning right with a major overhaul of the Computer Lab. It was out with the old and in with the new as Alief Independent School District donated twelve computers.  The computers are part of a program to help community resource centers meet Alief students’ educational activities by donating surplus computers after equipment upgrades. This is a huge advancement from our currently outdated and barely useable computers to actually working computers!

A Great Week Reaching The Community

What did you do last week? We registered over 57 voters!

Doing More with Less Vs Doing More with Nothing

Having a calling is the most wonderful thing in the world, and it is the absolutely worst thing in the world. Knowing you want to encourage people to take control of their lives, to vote, to turn their passion into their project, and to make their home their community even if it is an apartment, is awesome. However, it is the worst, because you are dependent on other people to donate money to give you that chance to follow that call to serve.  Most of the time, you work with businesses who want to help and that is fine and good, until the economy takes a fist to the midsection or another delicate part of the body.  That is what has happened to the oil sector of the economy. That is bad for Houston and the nonprofits that work and live here. And itis bad for Texans Together

Why is it so hard to vote in Texas?

Here’s a great look at voting in Harris County in Life of the Law by Jonathan Hirsch. The feature discusses SB14 – Texas Voter ID Law and even features our founder, Fred Lewis!

Recent studies have shown that Voter ID Laws have decreased voter turn out and more than half a million registered voters in Texas lack the proper identification.

AAC Putting the Heart in Communities

For Valentine's Day, our Apartment's Are Communities (AAC) Resource Centers put the heart in Valentine's Day.  Each center planned group activities for the kids with a party and Valentine's arts and crafts.
