Linda Visita Growing Green for Earth Day
April and March were great months for our Linda Vista Resource Center. The apartment complex is part of our Apartments are Communities program and the residents developed a full slate of activities for young and old.
The Linda Vista Center reached out to the Boy Scouts and started a troop of about 10 boys. The group is very active meeting every Wednesday afternoon. They're working towards their next big event a camping trip! The boys will be leaving on a Friday night and returning Sunday afternoon from The Bovay Scout Ranch in Navasota, Texas. With a water park, dinosaur dig, and sports park, they are planning to have a great outing!
The residents planned a Spring Break Party with games, food, and dancing. The activities brought together kids and adults for a community block party. Trying to involve more of the older residents, the Residential Coordinator worked with volunteers for the next event, a Senior Citizen Game Day with Bingo, Cards, Count Four and Crossword puzzle. It was a low key event that gave the older residents a chance to gather a visit over Blueberry Muffins and Coffee. Finally, several residents approached the Resource Center and asked to have a more spiritual gathering. This time the Resource Center brought out a lot of residents for the religious event with games, music, and free haircuts for some of the boys.
However, the highlight for April was the Earth Day celebrations. It combined normal afterschool activities with decorating pots and planting. The kids got to show off their “mad skillz” for art and give the gift of green to their community. The Residential Coordinator, Justice Hines, used the opportunity to start planning the planting of the garden for the complex. “We planted a whole lot, but I still want to get a bed in to let plants really grow.”
