San Jacinto River Coalition on KPFT
Tuesday morning Chris Schillaci of the San Jacinto River Coalition (SJRC) was on KPFT with Duane Bradley and Marlo Blue to discuss the San Jacinto Waste Pits and Texans Together.
Chris had a great time speaking with the hosts about the San Jacinto River Waste Pits. He explained the bans on fishing, location, and the current status. The effects the toxins had on the residents' health. He also discussed the Bring Back the Money campaign. The campaign seeks to bring the settlement from the San Jacinto River Waste Pits trial to the community that was affected by the leaking toxins. They discussed the devastating environmental impact of Superfund sites and the sixteen other designated cleanup sites in Harris County alone.
They also focused on the mission of Texans Together for civic engagement and the program of Empower Houston Leaders (EHL). Chris spoke about the multiple areas of interest of Texans Together and about advocating for increased participation by underserved communities. He also talked about how EHL developed leaders by giving them tools to do what the Texans Together community does for a positive change in their communities. Chris said, "We want all those folks who become leaders to stay leaders. To become sustainable. So they can help their own community and don't need any outside help. We're there to give the tools."
