Sankofa Showcase Great Success!

Sankofa is a word in the Akan language of Ghana that translates as "reach back and get it" (san - to return; ko - to go; fa - to fetch, to seek and take) (via Wikipedia) and one of our EHL (Empower Houston Leaders) graduate planned to do exactly that! Robbie Vanarsdale held a fund raiser to help send students to Tanzania to seek and take home parts of their heritage.

The showcase had a phenomenal turnout.  Not only a crowd to enjoy a great night of entertainment, but graduates from our Women’s EHL class, previous EHL graduates, and Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee. There was a diverse mixture of dance, drumming, and music for all tastes. Previous EHL members like  Daniella Green, graduate from the most recent Women's EHL class, and Chris from our very first EHL were instrumental keeping the evening on track.  Robbie used the tools she gained from the Empower Houston Leaders class to organize and network with other leaders. She worked with Baba

Shange from the Sehah Youth and Fitness Center for community outreach. Robbie recruited talent and vendors, organized the schedule, and worked with volunteers to promote the event.  She did all of this, while starting a new job.  Robbie exemplifies what being a leader is all about and we were so proud to be a part of her evening.  Outstanding job Robbie!
