Summer Splash at Linda Vista with My Brother's Keeper
We had a great event at The Linda Vista Resource Center Wednesday and Thursday last week. After a slight rain hiccup on the first day, the rest of the event was hot and beautiful. Perfect weather to come together for some fun, information, and connect to the community. It was a great way to really get in the summer spirit and enjoy friends new and old.
Hosted by My Brother's Keeper Houston ,the event brought community resources to the Apartment complex for the two day fair. My Brother's Keeper Houston is an organization building on a national initiative to break down barriers to opportunity for boys and young men of color. It is a great organization with wonderful activities and opportunities. This was their kick off for a summer full of great outreach and we were proud to be a part of it.
They brought some great venders to the event to connect attendees with important information, sign up opportunities like volunteering and the HealthCare Marketplace, health screenings, and fun. Some of the venders who attended were the Houston Health Department, Collaborative for Children, Houston 311, City of Houston Re-Entry Network, UnitedHealthcare Partner Services Healthcare Screenings, Change Happens, Texas Children's Hospital, Houston Independent School District,, My Brother's Keeper Outreach Center, and many more.
The first day focused on Job Readiness and Education. The Second Day focused on Health and Nutrition. All kinds of activities were offered from TB Screening to free Healthcare checks as well as games, raffles, bouncy houses, face painting, and the opportunity to appear in a photo as a shark! Snacks and drinks were provided as well as an indoor space to just chill when it got too hot. The whole event was provided with a soundtrack of a great DJ. The City of Houston provided a trove of information about city services from the Health Department, WIC, and Zika prevention. HISD provided information on services and activities as well as their HIPPY program (Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters).
