Working with the Community for Children
Last Saturday we were out in Alief working with other community leaders and vendors at an Alief Children's Health Fair. There was a great turnout with over a 100 families before all of the bad weather.
The vendors provided community referrals, health services, immunization information, community information, and helped parents sign up for different services. There were activities for the kids like bouncy castles, face painting, inflatable characters and even Elmo and Strawberry Shortcake for the youngest attendees. Other community leaders provided information for children activities and were signing kids up for summer and afterschool activities.
At our table, we registered voters and signed up volunteers. We also signed parents up for our next EHL (Empower Houston Leaders). These classes will focus on parents becoming leaders in their community with projects to help families get involved in schools and communities. It was great to see the interest and enthusiasm in the community.
